Synopsis

When the actor Yemn returns to his native village El Castillo on remote San Juan River, Nicaragua, the old fortress overlooking the river temporarily turns into an open air stage. The young actors rehearse a new play about the history of their river, starring the numerous travellers that tried to control it. Pirates meet Spanish conquerors, American engineers fight against indigenous chiefs. Between reality and fiction, the youngsters reflect on their own identity and the future of the community in the context of the latest Chinese canal project.

Outside the workshop, the actors live their own reality. Dismelda tries to flee the country to the wealthy neighbour Costa Rica, Christel dreams of studying abroad and Anibal is secretly in love with a mermaid. In a country where freedom of speech has become more and more suppressed, Yemn has created a sanctuary for open discussion and critical thinking.
